Some folks think it is better to turn their AC off when they go out or go away. However, if you turn your system off on a 95°F day, it will take longer to recover and bring the temperature down to a more comfortable 75° F. Instead, when you leave the house, leave your air conditioning on, but adjust the temperature settings. For example, if you like the temperature in your home to be 74° F, turn your thermostat to 79°F when you leave, and turn it down to 74° F when you return. Better yet, use a programmable thermostat and have the thermostat set to change the temp, a few hours before you return.
Since cold air sinks, if you have two zones, lower your downstairs thermostat a bit more. The upstairs system should still keep the house comfortable.
On very hot days, keep your curtains or blinds closed, to prevent solar heating.
